How this calculator works

We take the share of the battery you’re adding (target minus start), turn it into kWh, and divide by the charger’s power in kW to get hours. Real charging is a little slower — AC charging has conversion losses, and DC fast charging deliberately slows as the battery fills past about 80%.

What changes the number

  • DC fast chargers slow dramatically above 80% — which is why road-trip charging usually stops there.
  • Level 1 (a regular outlet, ~1.4 kW) is very slow; Level 2 home charging (7–11 kW) is the everyday norm.
  • Cold batteries charge slower until they warm up, so winter fast-charging takes longer.

Frequently asked questions

Why is real charging slower than this?

AC charging loses a little energy as heat, and DC fast charging tapers off as the battery fills. This gives the ideal time; add a margin, especially above 80%.

What charger power should I enter?

A standard home Level 2 charger is about 7–11 kW. A regular wall outlet (Level 1) is ~1.4 kW. Public DC fast chargers range from 50 to 350 kW.

Why charge only to 80%?

Charging slows sharply past 80% on DC fast chargers, and staying in the 20–80% band is gentler on battery longevity for daily use.
