EV & HybridEV vs Gas Calculator — How Much Would You Save?
See what switching to electric would do to your fuel bill. Enter your annual mileage, your gas car’s MPG and fuel price, and an EV’s efficiency and your electricity rate — we’ll compare the yearly running cost of each.
How this calculator works
For gas, we divide your annual miles by MPG and multiply by the price per gallon. For the EV, we divide annual miles by efficiency (mi/kWh) and multiply by your electricity rate. The difference is your yearly fuel saving — the verdict also projects it over five years.
What changes the number
- This compares fuel only. A full decision also weighs purchase price, incentives, depreciation, and home-charger install — see the cost-of-ownership calculator.
- Savings grow with mileage and with the gap between gas and electricity prices in your area.
- If you rely on pricey public fast charging rather than home charging, EV savings shrink substantially.
Frequently asked questions
Does this prove an EV is cheaper overall?
No — it only compares fuel. EVs usually win big on fuel and often on maintenance, but a higher purchase price and faster depreciation can offset that. Look at total cost of ownership for the full answer.
What efficiency and rate should I use?
Most EVs do 3–4 mi/kWh; use the EPA figure for the model. For the rate, check your electric bill’s price per kWh, and use the off-peak rate if you charge overnight.
What about hybrids?
A hybrid sits between the two — enter its high MPG (often 45–55) on the gas side to compare it against an EV or a conventional car.
