How this calculator works

Fuel cost per mile is the price per gallon divided by your MPG. Multiply that by your annual mileage to get the yearly fuel bill. It’s the cleanest way to compare two cars or to budget for driving.

What changes the number

  • This is fuel only — the all-in cost per mile (with depreciation, insurance, and maintenance) is much higher; see cost of ownership.
  • Cars vary widely: a 40-mpg hybrid can cost a third of what a 15-mpg truck does per mile at the same gas price.
  • Your real MPG matters more than the sticker — track a few tanks to get an honest figure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this my total cost per mile?

No — only fuel. Depreciation, insurance, maintenance, and tires often cost more per mile than gas does. The cost-of-ownership calculator adds everything up.

How do I lower my cost per mile?

Better MPG and cheaper fuel are the two levers. Smooth driving, correct tire pressure, and removing roof racks help; a more efficient car helps most.

How does an EV compare?

Usually much lower per mile — electricity is often 4–6 cents a mile versus 10–15 for gas. Compare with the EV charging and EV vs gas calculators.
