How this calculator works

We multiply your monthly premium by 12 for the annual cost and by 60 for five years, then divide the annual cost by your mileage to show what insurance adds to each mile. This won’t quote you a policy — it turns a premium you already know into the numbers that matter for budgeting and comparing cars.

What changes the number

  • Premiums swing hugely with your driving record, age, ZIP code, credit (in most states), and the car itself — get real quotes to compare.
  • Higher deductibles lower the premium; full coverage costs far more than liability-only on an older car.
  • Low-mileage and usage-based programs can cut the per-mile cost if you don’t drive much.

Frequently asked questions

Will this estimate my premium?

No — real premiums depend on dozens of personal factors no simple tool can capture. This takes a premium you already have (or a quote) and shows its true cost over time and per mile.

Why include insurance in cost per mile?

Because it’s a real cost of driving. Spread over your mileage it’s often several cents a mile — money that belongs in any honest cost-of-ownership comparison.

How can I lower it?

Shop around yearly, raise your deductible, drop collision/comprehensive on a low-value car, bundle policies, and ask about low-mileage or safe-driver discounts.
