Specs & ConversionsTowing & Payload Capacity Calculator
Make sure you’re not overloaded. Enter your vehicle’s rated capacity (towing or payload, from the door sticker or manual) and the total weight you’re adding to see how much headroom is left.
How this calculator works
We subtract your total load from the rated capacity to show what’s left, and the percentage you’re using. Always work from your specific vehicle’s rating — find towing capacity in the manual and payload on the driver’s door sticker — and include everything: trailer plus cargo for towing, or passengers plus cargo plus tongue weight for payload.
What changes the number
- Use your exact vehicle’s rating; it varies by engine, drivetrain, and package — don’t use a generic “up to” figure.
- For towing, count the loaded trailer weight; for payload, count passengers, cargo, and the trailer’s tongue weight.
- Leave a safety margin — running near 100% strains brakes and the transmission, especially on hills and in heat.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find my capacity?
Towing capacity is in the owner’s manual or a manufacturer towing guide for your exact configuration. Payload is on the yellow sticker on the driver’s door jamb (“the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed…”).
What’s the difference between towing and payload?
Towing capacity is what you can pull on a trailer; payload is what you can carry in the truck/cab/bed — including passengers and the trailer’s tongue weight. Both can be the limiting factor.
Is it safe to run at 100%?
It’s legal up to the rating, but leaving a margin is wise — full loads tax brakes, cooling, and the transmission, particularly towing uphill or in hot weather.
