Fuel & TripsCommute Cost Calculator — What Does Your Drive to Work Cost?
See what getting to work actually costs. Enter your one-way distance, how many days a week you drive in, your MPG, and the price of gas — we’ll total the fuel cost by day, month, and year.
How this calculator works
We double your one-way distance for the round trip, divide by your MPG to get the gallons burned each day, and multiply by the price per gallon. That daily figure is multiplied out by your days per week and 52 weeks for the monthly and annual totals.
What changes the number
- Stop-and-go commuting hurts MPG — use your real city economy, which is often well below the highway number.
- This counts fuel only. Parking, tolls, and the wear from extra miles add to the true cost — see cost of ownership.
- Carpooling or a couple of work-from-home days cut the annual figure proportionally.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include tolls and parking?
No — it’s fuel only. Add tolls and parking separately; for the full per-mile cost of driving including wear and depreciation, use the cost-of-ownership calculator.
Should I use city or highway MPG?
Use whichever matches your commute. Stop-and-go city driving can be 20–30% worse than the highway rating, so don’t use the optimistic number for a traffic-heavy drive.
How much could an EV save me?
Often a lot on a long commute, since electricity per mile is usually far cheaper than gas. Run your numbers through the EV vs Gas calculator.
