Hybrid Savings Calculator — Fuel Savings vs a Gas Car

A hybrid’s savings come from burning less gas. Enter the hybrid’s MPG, the MPG of the gas car you’d otherwise buy, your yearly mileage, the gas price, and how much more the hybrid costs — you’ll see the annual and five-year fuel savings and how long the premium takes to pay back.

Quick answer

A hybrid saves you the fuel difference between it and a regular car. A 50-MPG hybrid vs a 28-MPG car at 12,000 miles a year and $3.50 gas saves about $660 a year — roughly $3,300 over five years. If the hybrid costs $3,000 more, it pays that back in about 4–5 years.

How this calculator works

We work out the yearly gas bill for each car — miles ÷ MPG × price — and subtract the hybrid’s from the gas car’s to get your annual fuel saving. Multiply by five for the five-year figure, and divide the price premium by the annual saving to see how long the hybrid takes to pay for itself on fuel.

What changes the number

  • The bigger the MPG gap, the faster a hybrid pays back — a 50-MPG hybrid vs a 25-MPG car saves far more than vs a 35-MPG one.
  • High annual mileage and high gas prices both shorten the payback; a low-mileage driver may never recoup the premium on fuel alone.
  • This counts fuel only. Hybrids can also save on brake wear (regenerative braking) and often hold value well, but may cost slightly more to insure or repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hybrid worth the extra cost?

It depends on the MPG gap, your mileage, and gas prices. Divide the price premium by the annual fuel saving: if the payback is well inside how long you’ll keep the car, it pays for itself on fuel alone — and any resale premium is a bonus.

How much does a hybrid save per year?

Only the fuel difference. A 50-MPG hybrid vs a 28-MPG car at 12,000 miles and $3.50 gas saves about $660 a year. Bigger MPG gaps and more driving save more.

Hybrid or full EV — which saves more?

An EV usually has the lowest cost per mile because electricity is cheaper than gas, but a hybrid avoids charging and range planning. Compare an EV directly with the EV vs gas and EV cost-per-mile calculators.
